Rainbow Village : a story to help children celebrate diversity ISBN: 9781785922480

In a 'village not so far away', live four groups of colourful people: the Sproggles, who are tall and green and love dogs, the Flunkerdunks, who are red and square and often angry, the Mimplets, who are blue, triangular, and love cats, and the Wapsies, who are yellow and round and like to bake cupcakes. You might think these characters could all live happily together, but, no, they live in separate parts of the village and have a hearty dislike for each other. Into this unfriendly domain comes a stranger, a rabbit of many different colours, and he is made to feel uncomfortable because everyone is so unwelcoming, and after having travelled the world he wants to settle down in a nice village. He sits sadly outside the town and doesn't know what to do next. That night a huge storm erupts and washes off all the paint on the houses and causes tremendous damage. The inhabitants are horrified about this and can't think what to do. Along comes our nice stranger and suggests that he has travelled so widely that he might be able to help them re- build. Now, for the first time, the villagers construct their houses together, the colours all intermingled: 'Days were spent building, evenings were spent sharing, and nights were spent sleeping,' and in the building process, they learn about each other and that their differences are good things, not bad. The resultant new village is a symphony of bright colour and beauty, and the stranger is welcomed into this new community of diversity and friendship. The illustrations glow with vibrant hues that are stunning, and the text makes the importance of diversity with humour and style.
