Racism (How Can I Deal with...?) ISBN: 9780749670870
Hewitt, Sally
Published by Franklin Watts Ltd, 2007
In this information book with large print and photographs, we meet a number of different children who have been affected by racism. There is Kwame from Ghana who can't yet speak English but understands when one of his classmates says, 'Don't choose him, he's stupid'. Faiza, who is Muslim, is often left out at school because the other children think she is not allowed to do the things they do, and because she wears clothes that are different. Dipti, born in the UK but with parents from India, is told to 'go back where you belong', but as she belongs here, she is very upset. David is teased because he can't go to a birthday party on the Sabbath as he is Jewish. Shen, who is Chinese, is made fun of at school by the children calling him names that they think sound Chinese, and this makes him very angry. Binh, who has become a member of a Vietnamese gang hurts his black friend Marvin because he isn't allowed to join. Bilal and Nasreen are bullied on their way home from school each day and are afraid to tell anyone. We meet each of these children, sometimes their friends too, and we are given ways that they can cope with the things that are happening to them. There are happy outcomes in each case, and the children in their classes learn about the hurtful nature of racism. We meet a teacher and a headmaster too, and they tell us how they deal with racism in their schools. A glossary, an index, and a list of places to go for further information make this particularly accessible for schools.
