Mia, is a small, brown girl from a big city 'of streetlights and stars', and suddenly, she is transported by train to a grandmother she has never met, who lives 'deep in the heart of a whispering forest'. Grandma Mitzi is warm and lovely and welcoming, but Mia feels lonely and not a little frightened. Everything is so strange. We don't ever find out why Mia has had to make this transformation, but something sad and unfortunate has happened in her life to bring it about. There are toys and a beautiful new room in the cottage that will be her home, and a friendly dog called Lucky, but Mia doesn't want to eat much. When Grandma suggests a walk in the forest, she gives Mia a warm winter coat, which feels strange and heavy and off they go with Lucky. When it begins to snow, Mia is amazed. She has never seen snow before: 'It's cold, she gasped.' Then she runs through the snow to the village school. Grandma Mitzi explains that she will go there next term, and there is a girl in a blue coat who seems friendly. Mia is too shy to return her wave, but is more hopeful, even though all the children 'are as pale as snow' - nothing like the children in her city. Back at the cottage, Mia still finds life very strange, but in bed that night, she suddenly realises that the moon in the sky is the same moon she used to see in the city, and in delight at the look of it she runs out again into the snow. There she also remembers that each snowflake is different and each is perfect - as is she. This is the catalyst she needs to accept the friendship of the girl in the blue coat when they meet the next day at a special occasion in the village. Together they go sledging and have a wonderful day, and that evening Mia is able to share a cuddle with her Grandmother for the very first time. Beautifully illustrated and gentle in text, this book will be loved by children who are having to face difficult, new situations. Mia and Grandma Mitzi and Lucky have become a family, and there will be a happy ever after.
