Emily Is Being Bullied, What Can She Do? : a story and anti-bullying guide for children and adults to read together ISBN: 9781785925481
Cowie, Helen, Jones, Ffion and Tenenbaum, Harriet
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2019
Emily, who is a little shy, suddenly finds herself with big problems at school. Hannah, whom she has known for some time, starts a campaign against her, whispering to the other children and convincing them to exclude her. The real misery this causes for Emily is described in detail, and soon she is going to the nurse with head and stomach aches, her work is suffering, and at home she can't sleep, and is often cross. She can't understand why this is happening to her. She's not aware of having done anything wrong to her classmates, but when mom asks her what is wrong, she feels telling about it would make the bullying worse. With good information and black and white illustrations, we learn that bullying happens only when the actions of the child doing the bullying is repeated a number of times and that single incidents or fights are not bullying. Emily tries various ways to help herself, one of which is pushing Hannah back, which only makes the situation worse. She does try asserting herself, but while this helps a bit, she isn't expert at doing it. After a serious incident when Hannah and others push her around and pull her hair, she finally realises she needs help and tells her mum. She ends up telling the school nurse too, who explains to Emily's teacher what is going on and, steps are taken - good steps that take into consideration the feelings of both bully and victim. Things begin to get better, and we then learn the other side - a short chapter by Hannah, who now realises the hurt she has caused, and another short chapter from the two children who had been friends with Emily but who had only watched from the sidelines. A long section for parents, carers and teachers gives lots of excellent advice on how to help in these terrible situations, and, altogether, this is a good, solid approach for all concerned about how to handle bullying at school and home. There is also a comprehensive list of organisations who can help.
