Published by Franklin Watts, 2017
One of a series of information books for young children (Key Stage 1) with stories of individual children having problems and giving advice on how to cope. This one about dealing with a new sibling has stories from nine children who have had problems and how they solved them. Ellie doesn’t want the coming baby, doesn’t think she will love him; Liam is worried his mum won’t be okay; Fran helps get ready for the new baby; Frank is bored by his baby brother; Mia is jealous because the baby gets all the attention; Jade says her baby brother is a nuisance because he cries all the time; Gemma picks up her baby brother and has to be told not to without mum about; Jesse’s little sister always gets her own way; Kayo worries that her stepdad won’t love her when the new baby arrives. These problems are all solved by talking to others – parents, siblings or friends, and we are given several ways of coping for each situation. One of the plusses in these stories is that parents will also find the advice helpful. The bright, simple illustrations and clear text add much to the whole, and at the end, a short glossary, some helpful web sites, a brief index, and notes for adults using the book will be useful. There is also a play script for schools, but this particular book in the series is probably more of use in the home. A nicely produced, practical book.
