What is Race? Who are Racists? Why Does Skin Colour Matter? And Other Big Questions ISBN: 9781526303981
Heuchon, Claire and Shukla, Nikesh
Published by Wayland, 2018
This information book is a pull-no-punches description of racism and all the things it means to people who suffer from it. The terms race and racism are explained, and we are given nine examples of people of colour who describe their experiences. These include Black, Chinese, Indian, and LGBT people, and their descriptions are often harrowing. The racism can be subtle and even unintentional, but is something that we all must become aware of and do our best to ‘unlearn’. Then there are the decidedly un-subtle things, which are very much against the law, and there is an excellent chapter on The Equality Act 2010. This explains the four main types of race discrimination: Direct, Indirect, Harassment and Victimisation. We learn about the murder of Stephen Lawrence too and the length of time it took to bring two of his attackers to justice. The chapter on race and representation explains how easy it is to forget that people of colour often don’t see representatives of themselves in magazines or newspapers or in films or TV. One test showed that children who are shown two dolls, one black and one white, will call the white one ‘good’ and the black one ‘bad’. A good final chapter is on how one can challenge racism. Excellent photographs, ‘Think About’ boxes, lots of colour, and extras such as a glossary, a list of websites and books, and an index, make this a good option for schools.
