Leaping Lemmings! ISBN: 9781454918196
Briggs, John and Slater, Nicola
Published by Sterling, 2016
While this could happily be used with children from 6+, it could also be used for teenagers because of it's huge humour and cleverness. Lemmings are all alike, aren't they? They look alike, they sound alike (squeak, squeak) and they act alike - by falling off of cliffs. Wrong! There is one who is not at all like other lemmings. He wears clothes for a start - weird clothes - and he plays the bongos instead of squeaking. He also likes pizza instead of moss from under rocks, but when he insists the other lemmings call him Larry, they are horrified: 'What's a Larry? I'm not calling him Larry. No lemming's ever been called Larry. No lemming's ever been called anything.' Larry, who is very sure of himself, decides to leave the lemmings and try to live with other animals, but the seals make a lot of noise, the puffins live on cliffs, and the polar bear - well, that's obvious! Larry decides to return home, just in time to find the lemmings about to march off a cliff. He saves the day by leading them back to his 'chalet' where he feeds them all on 'pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and hot sauce'. The final illustrations show all the lemmings now wearing weird clothes and answering the question 'If all your friends jumped off a cliff' would you?'. Some still want to follow the crowd, but others find good questions to ask before doing so or say definitely not. Larry is pleased that most of his friends are now thinking for themselves. It's a great message in a wonderful thought-provoking book.
