Night Shift: An insight into depression that words often struggle to reach ISBN: 9781471406232
Gliori, Debi
Published by Hot Key Books, 2017
The author and illustrator suffers from spells of severe depression herself, and while this book is aimed at teenagers and adults, it could also be used with pre-teenagers if necessary because the pictures are so tremendous and evocative. The feelings of depression are depicted in beautiful but sombre black and white pictures as fog and attacking dragons, and the girl, who could be young or much older sees these things in her mind through days and nights at a time. There is hope at the end when she finds a beautiful feather 'and something shifted.' In a page where the author talks about her depression we learn: 'Being ill and unable to communicate how we feel is such a lonely business. My hope is that this book will help explain what we're going through.' And so it does, even for those of us lucky enough not to have gone through the experience. Remarkable.
