Autism in My Family: A Journal for Siblings of Children with ASD ISBN: 9781785927072
Faherty, Catherine and Tucker, Sandra
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2017
In this workbook or journal, brothers and sisters of children on the autistic spectrum can record their problems, feelings and their relationship with their autistic sibling as well as with their parents. Lots of space to draw, write, paste, scribble and whatever else takes the fancy makes this useful in understanding one's own self as well as the brother or sister. Symbols on some pages show whether that page is be be used in conjunction with parents or the autistic sibling, or whether the whole family should be involved. Where there is no symbol, the child should do the work by him or herself. Twelve different sections cover such topics as an introduction (which has us fill in facts about our particular family) sensory experience, ways of thinking, talent and creative expression, people, understanding, thoughts, communication, school, friends, feeling upset, and happiness. The book covers an immense range of emotions and will give a child who is having difficulties accepting the autistic member of the family the empowerment he or she needs to be patient and loving. It will also give parents the information they need about their neuro-typical child to help support them and live happily in the family as it is and not as they might want it to be. The author has developed a web site at where children can upload pictures to share with other siblings of autistic people - a remarkable idea that may provide real help by way of technology.
