The Growing Up Guide for Girls: What Girls on the Autism Spectrum Need to Know! ISBN: 9781849055741
Hartman, Davida and Suggs, Margaret Anne
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers Ltd, 2015
This beautifully illustrated book about puberty in girls is aimed specifically at young people on the autistic spectrum, but much of the information will be very useful to any young person beginning to sense that she is growing up. The information is precise and detailed, and the format of the book means that it is written and published in a style that is clear and uncluttered. The pictures, one to each page, are highly visual and follow one girl in particular as she makes her way through puberty. Topics include hair and bodily hygiene, breasts, periods, skin, clothes and keeping them clean, emotions and PMT, crushes and the good and bad ways of handling them, friends and the importance of understanding good and bad touching, the internet and advice on how to use it properly and keep safe, and a final page on boys and how they go through puberty too. The emphasis is on things that those on the autistic spectrum might find difficult to understand, such as the term 'puppy fat' and what it actually means, or that following someone around that one has a crush on is not a good idea. The book is very well produced and attractive to hold and read. Available from Amazon, from good book shops, and from the publisher at www.jkp.com.
