Down's Syndrome (Need to know) ISBN: 9780431188430
Routh, Kristina
Published by Heinemann Library, 2004
One of the strengths of this book is the fact that it can be of use to both children and adults. The information is clear and detailed, and while many 10 year olds could handle it, it is quite sophisticated too. It would be a good choice for parents just beginning to come to terms with a diagnosis of Down's Syndrome in their child. An explanation of Down's is followed by a short history of the recognition of the condition. Different kinds of Down's are explained and the physical characteristics. A long section on living with the condition covers such issues as the early days of a baby, the parents' expectations, physical milestones in development, language and communication, education, teenagers, adults, and other people's expectations. A good section on possible health problems, such as heart defects, hearing and eye problems and lesser possibilities such as thyroid disease, diabetes, Hirschprung's disease, and leukaemia are explained. Screening tests and diagnostic tests are also explained, as is early intervention to help the child through physiotherapy and speech therapy. The importance of support is emphasised and of changing attitudes from the public, and the book ends on a positive note. A long list of organisations in the UK, the USA, Australia and New Zealand are given as well as a list of books for further reading. A good glossary and index are also provided. An excellent basic 'text' about the condition.
