Billy and the Barglebogle ISBN: 9780862646103
Camp, Lindsay and Utton, Peter
Published by Andersen Press, 1995

The Barglebogle arrives at Billy's house at the same moment as his baby sister. Billy doesn't understand why it has come, but it is huge and horrible, and Billy must do battle with it every day. He is weary of the fighting, and he cannot understand why the monster is there. Then one day the Barglebogle tries to take the baby, and Billy realises this is the reason it has appeared. He must fight one last battle for the baby, and when he does, the Barglebogle shrinks to manageable size. It doesn't disappear altogether - it comes back 'now and again' - but it is not so frightening any more. And baby sister 'was always smiling at her brave big brother'. Wonderfully subtle, imaginative treatment of jealousy. Smashing illustrations.
