To an adult, this is painful. Simon and dad are enjoying a happy afternoon in the park. They sail boats and buy a red balloon and then it is time to go to the train. On the train they read books and enjoy a picnic tea together, and Simon's anxious questions begin: 'Are we nearly there?' 'It isn't far, is it?' These are repeated to constant assurances from dad that they are 'nearly there'. It is dark when they arrive at the little town, and as they walk to the house, the litany of questions and answers continues. At the door they have 'one more hug', and when mum comes to the door, dad waves good-bye. Simple but very telling.
