The snow goose ISBN: 9781558581944
Vainio, Pirkko
Published by North-South Books, 1993
Anna lives on a farm in a place where there is lots of snow. One day she makes a snow goose, and that night she dreams the snow goose carries her far away through the glittering skies. The next morning the snow goose has melted, and Anna feels her loss keenly. Soon after, her grandfather finds a real snow goose that has been injured. He and Anna nurse it carefully, but it dies, leaving behind an egg. Anna's grief is assuaged by her care for the egg and, after it hatches, of the gosling - who learns to follow her everywhere. One day, when a flock of geese flies over, the little snow goose - now grown - joins them. But Anna is more ready for this separation. She asks her grandfather, 'Will she come back?'...'Who knows'. Words are too prosaic to describe this wistful, mystic story.
