What happens in court? a guide for children ISBN: 9781903699492
Argent, Hedi and Lane, Mary
Published by British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), 2004
A clear and concise pamphlet containing in simple language exactly what happens in court: what a court is, the people found there and their jobs, and what happens there. We are taken through the court procedures by way of a story. Lee, who is 7, has to be taken into care suddenly because his parents have left him alone. We then learn about Emergency Protection Orders, Interim Care Orders, Care Orders, and Final Hearings. Lee must have a Full Care Order, and, finally, an adoption plan. We also learn about Residence Orders and Special Guardianship Orders. Lee's adoptive mum and her family go with him to an Adoption Hearing, where they become a forever family through an Adoption Order - and Lee gets to hold the judge's wig! While the terms are technical and of necessity complicated, the explanations are very clear and will help allay fears children may have about courts. Recommended by Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, DBE. Lots of colour photos and questions for the children to answer give the booklet warmth and accessibility. Available from BAAF Publications Saffron House, 6-10 Kirby Street, London EC1N 8TS or www.baaf.org.uk.
