Alfie and his family live across from the MacNally family and their old cat Smoky. Smoky is so old he just wants to sleep and sit in the sun, but he and Bob MacNally are close. When Smoky dies, Bob is very upset and tells his family he wants no presents for his coming fifty-second birthday. Alfie thinks they should have a surprise party for him, and preparations are soon under way. Bob's daughter finds the perfect present - a new kitten. The pictures are full of warmth and family detail, and the elderly, cross old cat is wonderful! Alfie's mum explains Smoky's death in simple terms, and Alfie and Bob's daughter put up a memorial to him.
