Kit's sister has died in a freak accident, and for the past year she has felt both guilty and angry: guilty because she couldn't love Juliet and angry because she believed her parents loved Juliet more than they loved her. Kit is adopted, and she has grown up thinking that asthmatic, demanding Juliet is more loved because she is the natural daughter. Kit and her mum have moved to Scotland, her dad having gone off to Australia to work, and Kit is having to cope with her strange surroundings as well as her guilt. The story has a supernatural aspect - a friendly ghost in a neglected Japanese garden - as well as a number of threads that come together in a mysterious way. Kit comes to terms with her past and learns just how much her adoptive mum loves her. Compulsively readable.
