A tale worth telling ISBN: 9781896764603
Bockus, Petra and Grossman, Linda Sky
Published by Second Story Press, 2002
David is new in school and his new friends Niron and Vesna find him quiet and withdrawn. When Niron sees that David has an injured arm, he wants to know what happened, but David refuses to tell. He says he's tried to tell his dad and his sister, but they were too busy to listen: 'Nobody cares much what I have to say, Nobody will listen, so just go away.' However, when he's asked to join in a soccer game, David blurts out that the coach is the one who has been both physically and verbally abusing him. The children find an adult friend to confide in, and the problem is sorted. Told in just-about adequate rhyming couplets that sometimes don't scan, the story nevertheless does present a truthful image of what happens when children are abused by an adult who tries to keep the abuse secret. A Canadian project from the Toronto Child Abuse Centre, the book is available in the UK from Gazelle Books (sales@gazellebooks.co.uk, Tel: 01524 68765).
