Five year old George visits his Grandmother almost every day, and though she suffers from dementia, he is always patient and understanding and finds ways to help her with her memory. When he arrives at her door, she is delighted to see him, but doesn't remember that she last saw him only the day before. He helps her to find the one chocolate biscuit left, and they share it; then he suggests they play in the garden. Grandmother can't button up her coat, but George helps her: 'Buttons are fiddley,' he says, and proudly shows her this new skill he has. They play astronauts and aliens, and he scares away the pigeons, the 'invading aliens' while she sits on a bench. When she becomes stressed and worried: 'Help, Help! Where am I?' He comes down from the tree and takes her back into the house: 'You are safe now,' he explains. She forgets his name and calls him Joe, but he doesn't mind, even when she says that she has a grandson named George and he explains that it is he. She is sad that she has forgotten his name, but he shows her an old picture of the two of them and tells her he will always be there to help her remember things. In the end, they both know that 'even if Grandma's mind forgot who he was, her heart always remembered.' A deeply moving and unsentimental story about a small boy and his beloved Grandmother and their very special relationship; the illustrations are a joy and set the text beautifully in it's proper milieu. Splendid!
