She's My Dad! : a story for children who have a transgender parent or relative ISBN: 9781785926150
Garcia, Joules and Savage, Sarah
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2020
This is a companion book to 'He's My Mum' and is very similar in context and story line. Mini is 6 years old, and she and her Dad love kittens more than anything except each other, so every Saturday they go to help at the cat rescue centre. This Saturday, they must then get ready to go to Grampa's birthday party by dressing up and painting their nails. All this seems rather odd until Mini explains that her Dad has transitioned and is now a 'she'. Mini found this idea strange and 'scary' in the beginning, but now has adjusted nicely and is happy to use 'she' and 'her' when referring to Haley. Haley is happy for Mini to call her either Dad or Haley. At the birthday party, Mini's cousin, Kat, uses the wrong pronouns when talking about Haley, so Mini must explain that this is hurtful. Kat is apologetic and promises to do better. Mini is very proud of Haley, and is happy to tell people, 'She's My Dad'. This is a single parent family, and the explanations will be easily understood by young children. Great art work. There are a number of questions for discussion, and a basic Glossary at the end of the book. Available from Amazon, from book shops and from the publisher: www.jkp.com.
