Binnie the Baboon and the Big Worries : a story to help kids with anxiety ISBN: 9781839970252
Peacock, Sarah and Treisman, Karen
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2021
'Binnie the baboon was a colourful, creative, loving and energetic monkey'. So begins this picture book which is certainly 'colourful and creative' too! With her big eyes, yellow grass skirt and blue striped face, she is colour personified, as is her setting in the jungles of Rwanda. But Binnie is also a deeply worried and stressed young monkey, and is capable of worrying about anything. And when she does, she suffers all the physical symptoms - feeling hot, tensing up her muscles, butterflies, and a fast heartbeat. She tries to stop the worries by tricking them, but that's no good. Her world feels 'too big, too confusing, too scary'- like being caught in a 'spider web'. Luckily, she has six friends who each have special talents - Micky the meerkat, Raphy the rhino, Gabe the gorilla, Chase the chimp, Kace the kudu, and Ellen the elephant - and they are all very willing to help. They each confess what they worry about and explain how they handle those worries. Their plan is to make her a 'Worry Warrior' or a 'Worry Wizard'. Binnie insists she even 'gets worried about being worried'. They discuss the positives about worrying when the reason is a good one- to provide safety if one is about to do something silly or dangerous. The friends then think up all sorts of ways to stop the worrying - mindfulness, yoga (to chase away the 'flutterflies'), stretching or dancing or using a rhyme to sing while moving about, drumming, or 'hand breathing', happy and calm thoughts, sharing the worries or writing about them, and the last one from Kace, the kudu thinks about all his friends - his 'life cheerleaders' - who support him in so many ways. With her friends help, Binnie tries lots of different possibilities and begins to grow in 'confidence and hope'. This all takes time, and perseverence is necessary. A picture of Binnie to colour-in is at the end of the story, and there are a number of questions to mull over with a parent or carer. These lovable animals in their ultra-bright setting provide great interest and support. Available from Amazon, from book shops, and from the publisher: www.jkp.com.
