Neon the Ninja Meets the Nightmares : a story to help kids to sleep ISBN: 9781839970191
Peacock, Sarah and Treisman, Karen
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2021
'Neon is a special and magical ninja. He is bubbling, bright and brilliant.' So begins this story about nightmares and bad dreams and solving them. And Neon really is 'bright and brilliant', pictured in psychedelic colours with lots of comic-style action pictures of him and the grey ink-blotch nightmares. Neon has a special job - to help people suffering from bad dreams. All of us have them, but Neon and his ninja friends have the answers. We see Neon getting rid of the bad dreams and protecting the good ones, and the first thing he does is to inspect every part of one's room last thing at night to be sure nothing is lurking. If he finds suspect dreams, out they go in various ways, such as chewing them up or stamping on them, or even flushing them down the toilet! He explains tricks one can use too, such as making oneself wake up, or using our imaginations to create happier endings for the bad dreams. He also explains about drawing the dream or writing a diary about dreams or inventing a potion to keep the dreams away (a cup of cocoa maybe?) Lastly, it is good to have a happy relaxing time before bed. There are lots of positive suggestions, and the very colourful illustrations are a 'tonic' in themselves. At the end there are questions to think about and mull over, perhaps with a parent or carer. 'The best bit is that we all have an inner ninja inside us'. Great fun and useful too.
