He's My Mom! : a story for children who have a transgender parent or relative ISBN: 9781787755741
Garcia, Joules and Savage, Sarah
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2021
Benjamin, known as Bambi because he is small, has just acquired a new puppy, and is very pleased that they are going on a family camping holiday including all the male members of their extended family This includes Mom as well, because he has transitioned over the past year, and is happier now in his male gender. Bambi has learned to use masculine pronouns when talking about Mom, and he must explain to his cousin why when talking about him he must do the same, because Mom and he are both hurt if he doesn't. Mom is still called Mom by Bambi, and known as 'David' by everyone else. 'Though David's outsides might have changed, inside he's still my mom.' Bambi has accepted this new Dad in his life, and they continue very close. The camping trip is a huge success, and all the other men and boys involved are very supportive. There is no mention of a female or another man in their lives, so one assumes David is now a single parent. The pictures are simple and the colours muted but expressive. The mis-gendering is handled well, and the explanations are excellent. There is a very short glossary and some questions to use at the end of the book. Altogether, a good introduction for young children about transgendering and the differences it makes to the children involved. Available from Amazon, Book shops, and the publisher at www.jkp.com.
