One of the strengths of this book about sexuality in all its many versions is that it explains the terms that are used to describe the different kinds often difficult to understand, particularly for kids. We learn the meaning of words like: gender and gender identity, intersex, cisgender, asexual, gay and lesbian, straight (heterosexual), bisexual (pansexual), orientations (sexual or romantic), discrimination, sexism, transgender and transphobia, and homophobia. All these are described in simple but truthful terms with easily understood and enjoyable vignette pictures to go with them. I must say, I leaned a lot! There are also sections on ‘Love and Attraction’, and ‘Having Kids’, both of which emphasise the fact that such things are entirely up to the individual and no one has to make the same decisions. The section on ‘Discrimination’ covers sexism, racism and bullying: ‘Discrimination is ALWAYS wrong.’ There is also a section on ‘Privilege’, which is defined as ‘when you get advantages, or nice treatment, or an easier life just because of who you are.’ The section on ‘Intersectionality’ is about having lots of identities at the same time. For instance, one can be autistic and bisexual, which might mean he or she is discriminated against; but on the other hand have qualities that give him or her privileges, such as being white. Chapter ten, ‘Being an Ally’, emphasises the importance of being kind to others and showing respect and helpfulness to all those around us, whatever their orientation may be. The final chapter tells us to be ourselves, ‘You be you! And help others be themselves.’ A great book of real power, this will be useful in schools, at home, and just about anywhere.
