What’s Going on Inside My Head? Starting Conversations with Your Child about Positive Mental Health ISBN: 9781472959232
Jennings, Sarah and Potter, Molly
Published by Featherstone, 2019
This picture book, intended to be used by parents with their children, provides a good general introduction to the brain and the importance of keeping it healthy. Good ways of going about this include: good food, exercise, drinking lots of water, sleeping well, spending time outside, and finding time to relax. There are sections on happiness, the emotions and how to control what we do about them, coping when upset, how to get rid of bad ‘ruminations’ we can do nothing about, finding people to talk to when something goes wrong, using positive thoughts about friends and family, being a good friend, and improving ones thinking habits. The suggestions about meditation and forms of mindfulness provide positive ways of coming to terms with thoughts that are less than helpful. In fact, the whole book is full of positivity and honest assessments about where we might be going wrong. Three pages of information for parents at the end will be useful, and the illustrations are jolly and informative. An excellent choice for children who are not particularly worried but who may need encouragement to find ways of keeping things from going wrong, as well as those who are showing they have real problems that need support and direction.
