Grumpy Duck ISBN: 9781406378245
Dunbar, Joyce and Horacek, Petr
Published by Walker Books, 2018
Oh dear! Duck really is grumpy. She can't swim in her pond because it has gone dry, and she has no one to play with. A small black cloud has appeared above her head, and as she goes in search of her friends, the cloud becomes bigger and bigger as she upsets each one with her negative attitude to their suggestions of what she might do. Soon they are all grumpy - dog, pig, cockerel, rabbit, tortoise and goat - and the black cloud is 'ginormous'! But this cloud is no ordinary grumpy cloud. It starts to rain, and suddenly the animals are all dancing around happily in 'millions of big shiny wet splashy raindrops', literally singing in the rain. In a lovely reference to the film they sing: 'What a glorious feeling...we're happy again just waddling and paddling by the pond.' It's a nicely moral tale about being kind to your friends even when you feel grumpy, and the illustrations are super-great too. A really imaginative and fun picture book.
