Dennis Goes Home ISBN: 9781910039113
Sambrooks, Paul and Tani, Tommaso Levente
Published by British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), 2014
In the third book in a series about the little duck Dennis and his younger sister, Donna, this story shows the two ducklings being returned to their parents after having been fostered. Annie, their social worker, explains that she and other grownups are going to show their parents how to take care of the children so they will be safe and properly looked after. The little ducks want to go home, but will also be sad to leave their foster parents who have been good to them. Sometimes they have sleepovers with their parents so mum and dad can try out the things they have been learning, and it seems to be going well. Much as Dennis wants to go home, he is a little worried that his parents might 'forget' how to look after the ducklings properly, and Annie reassures him that she will often visit and talk not only to the parents but also to the children themselves. Altogether, it is a happy occasion when the children/ducklings can join their parents in the pond. The illustrator of this series is very good at bright colours and patterns that children will respond to positively, and both text and pictures are practical and non-emotional, which will be best for children experiencing these life-changing situations. The book is available from the publisher, the BAAF, Saffron House, 6-10 Kirby Street, London, EC1N 8TS, (www.baaf.org.uk).
