Can I Tell You About Selective Mutism?: A Guide for Friends, Family and Professionals ISBN: 9781849052894
Gallow, Robyn, Johnson, Maggie and Wintgens, Alison
Published by Jessica Kingsley Pub, 2012
Hannah has Selective Mutism. The book is told in the first person, through her eyes, and she is very honest about her problem and how she wants it addressed. She explains that it is an intense form of shyness, a phobia, and that it can be accompanied by other phobias. She talks particularly about school and how she needs to be treated by teachers and friends. At home she is able to chat with family quite confidently, but because of the frustrations and stresses of school, she is sometimes difficult to live with when she gets home. Black and white line drawings add to Hannah's story, which is detailed and meticulous. As well as Hannah writing her own story, she also writes a long-ish section at the end of the book on how parents and teachers can help her cope. This is also very detailed and should be of help to other children with similar problems. This is a book that belongs in all schools and should be read by teachers as well as friends of children suffering from this debilitating condition.
