Adopting a Brother or Sister ISBN: 9781907585005
Argent, Hedi
Published by British Association for Adoption and Fostering, 2010
This book, subtitled 'A guide for young children, will prove a valuable tool for families planning adoption of another child. We meet Ellie at the beginning of the story, and she tells us how her family adopted Franco when she was five and he was only two. Before the adoption, she and her parents listed all the good things about having another member of the family and then listed Ellie's further questions that needed to be answered. These were questions such as Where do adopted children come from? Can they come and take my new brother or sister away again? Other mums have babies so why don't we? Will mum and dad be too busy to take as much notice of me as before? These and other questions make up the section headings and are answered fully, honestly and accurately in language young children will have no trouble in understanding. There are spaces left for children to make their own lists and draw pictures. It becomes clear in the various sections that Ellie sometimes found Franco difficult, particularly in the beginning, and it is admitted that one doesn't necessary love the new sibling right away. There are a few children's drawings that add much to the cheerfulness of the production. Available from Amazon or from the BAAF, Saffron House, 6-10 Kirby Street, London EC1N 8TS (
